Jars Of Clay has hit the studio again to work on the follow-up to their 2006 record, Good Monsters. Keyboardist Charlie Lowell writes...
Chapter 10...in which four college friends head into yet another adventure of soundscapes and word pictures....
Actually, I'm not sure what chapter we're on, it depends on how you count. But I can say that we are thrilled to be heading back into rehearsals this week with a longtime friend and collaborator, Ron Aniello. He helped out a lot on Who We Are Instead, as well as Good Monsters. Ron's from the Left Coast, and he worked on our favorite Guster record, Keep It Together. He'll be with us for a few weeks... starting with rehearsals - what we call "pre-production" in the business. It's where we flesh out the songs live and make sure everything is clicking and working efficiently. We'll be recording back at Sputnik Sound again (that's Homebase if you're keeping score). Mitch Dane is our engineer and partner there, a great friend and wonderful producer in his own right. It'll be great to have the team back together, including Jeremy and Gabe, our incredible rhythm section. Check out their Disappointed By Candy records on iTunes if you haven't.
This does mark our first official independent release (Christmas Songs being a "seasonal album"). It will be an exciting year for us - look for a release in early '09. We will be out on the road quite a bit later this year, so don't be misled by our quiet Spring. We miss the fan interaction and live communication, but are anticipating some fun creative energy at Sputnik!
Happy Spring wherever you are. It was 75 two days ago, but we're expecting a frost tonight. Go figure. Cover your plants and bundle up.
-Charlie
